Tech incubator YES!Delft has, again, secured a spot in the top 5 of the UBI Global ranking of the world’s best university incubators. The ComplexTech startup is expanding abroad! To better serve their customers and be present in the heart of the German automotive industry, they are taking their first step towards internationalization by opening a new office in Munich. From there, they will service and expand its customer base in Germany and Austria.
What is the impact of the Internet of Things on the environment? And will 5G help or hinder Britain’s target of net-zero emissions by 2050? As the implementation of 5G is projected to consume nine times more power than 4G the Accelerator alumnus’ power harvesting solution might be the way forward.
IJsbrand de Lange, the founder of the MedTech startup, received the Inspirational Award 2019. The EIT Health Validation Lab and Accelerator alumnus is developing a brace that tackles tremors or uncontrollable rhythmic movements, common in Parkinsons patients. IJsbrand received the award at the opening ceremony of the TU Delft academic year.
The AI and EdTech startup Feedback Fruits and the CleanTech startup Solar Monkey are nominated by Deloitte in the category Technology Fast 50. The nomination recognizes the fastest growing technology companies which were founded no more than four years ago. Moreover, the nominees will compete in Amsterdam in October for the Rising Star 2019 award.
Starting a new business in the Netherlands might be a challenge, but the FWDpay team is taking on two challenges. They have joined the ranks of our Digital Hub YES!Delft The Hague. This startup is grasping the opportunity that Open Banking offers: by enabling customers to simply create SMART contracts and thus control money flow. Moreover, the founders have also kicked off Project.BB. Together with students from TU Delft Robotics Minor and Haagse Hogeschool Blockchain Minor, they are developing a beach cleaning robot!
The Validation Lab alumnus has been selected as a finalist for this year’s HealthTech Challenge. This is the European leg of the worldwide Women Startup Challenge, organized by Women Who Tech. The finalists will compete for a $50,000 cash grant on October 7 in Paris. Meds²Go develops innovative cooling containers for people who use temperature-sensitive medicines.
The MedTech startup STIL and the Robotics/AI startup Mythronics kicked off the Digital Entrepreneurship course for 70 students at the Delft Center for Entrepreneurship. During the course, they presented challenges, problems, and issues that come with tech entrepreneurship. Students then could try their hand at being an entrepreneur by pitching their ideas.
The ComplexTech startup and Accelerator alumnus is participating in the Antwerp Port XL program. They are matched to the DEME Group to do a use case with the aim of getting a paid contract. Additionally, they announced a new partnership with Maxon Benelux. Together they aim to develop a new generation of haptic ship controls.

The AI legal startup collaborated with the national leadership of the Openbaar Ministerie. Concretely, they designed a search engine for various criminal cases together. The national newspaper Trouw reports that this has shown that prosecutors ask for different sentencing for the same crimes depending on the region.
This MedTech startup was named Startup of the Week by Sprout! They are the developers of the Momo BedSense. This medical device provides insight into the prevention of pressure ulcers and makes prevention easier. In addition, they could help cut the costs associated with pressure ulcers, which runs into 15 billion euros annually on a European level.

This AI/Blockchain Validation Lab alumnus just launched the first phase of their decentralized AI platform. Consequently, data science teams can upload their vast quantities of data – for example for a chatbot. Finally, ambassadors around the world then structure, enrich and annotated it. In this aspect, it works similarly to Mechanical Turk.
Commercial Director Jaap Hoogland received the prestigious Red Dot Design Award for the design of the Skelex360. The design for the exoskeleton with its high ergonomic wearability was made in collaboration with Van Berlo. Above all, The Red Dot jury praised the way the Skelex360 supports wearers without limiting their freedom of movement.
Last year’s EIT Health Validation Lab winners — AidX Medical got the chance to pitch on national radio, in BNR Zakendoen. Co-founder Mirte Vendel represented the MedTech startup and impressed the jury of entrepreneurs with her pitch. Their product makes malaria detection cheaper, faster, accessible to all and more reliable. Finally, their goal is to enable malaria diagnoses to be executed without the need for medical expertise, to be implemented in rural areas.
Four YES!Delft startups, Physee, Envision, CloudCuddle, and Kitepower, have been nominated in the Innovation top 100 by the KVK (Dutch Chamber of Commerce). Finally, the exact raking will be presented by the jury on September 25. Moreover, Robotics startup Somnox and CleanTech startup Qlayers were featured in the KVK YouTube series Beyond Business.
On the 25th of June YES!Delft The Hague was proud to host Startup Tuesday! This weekly event is a collaboration between the innovative hubs in The Hague with the aim to strengthen connections and support impact-driven entrepreneurship. Getting investment as a startup is such a challenge that there are specific hurdles, one of which is the Valley of Death. YES!Funded team from YES!Delft aims to demystify this challenge during the Rotterdam Capital Days with a dedicated event. During September 18th – 22nd, the three-day event aims to demystify the world of capital, boosting access to funding for startups and scaleups. Ultimately, with the goal of connecting entrepreneurs and investors. Anyone with an interest in how to attract and raise capital in the area of Rotterdam is invited. Mainly, there will be investors – angels, corporate venture, venture capital, impact, public, and more. YES!Delft service YES!Funded will host an event about the so-called Valley of Death in funding.
What is the Valley of Death?
Jan Geert van Hall, the investment director at YES!Delft describes the Valley of Death as a European problem – the funding gap startups almost inevitably run into. This funding gap usually comes about around the time they have a well-working prototype and some paying pilot customers but need a financial boost to start production and activate sales. At this point, the startups are too advanced for government subsidies, and at the same time too early stage for VC’s. At least in Europe. During the YES!Delft dedicated event at Rotterdam Capital Days, Jan Geert and guests will share the experiences of YES!Funded about the Valley of Death and explore possible solutions to this problem.

1. Financial forecasting
“The ability to look ahead and anticipate for the future is a basic entrepreneurial financial skill. The lack of such a vision within a company is a definite red flag as it shows a lack of financial discipline.”
2. Top team
“This is a big one. First off, the chances of receiving investment are very low if you are a single founder. Ideally, you have a team of people with different disciplines. Secondly, there is a shared long term vision in the company. Especially the founders should be on the same page and have the same ultimate goals, whether that is an acquisition or scaling up.”
3. Intellectual property
“IP is another facet investors will look at, and for several reasons. First, to make sure you will be able to defend your product from infringement. But parallel to that, they want to understand what it is your product is capable of and the problems it claims to solve. Why is your product unique, and why hasn’t it been invented before?”
4. Checking important milestones
“Having a roadmap with milestones and a clear vision is essential. It shows your estimated worth at each milestone but also the amount of money you need to get there is invaluable when presenting yourself to investors. It doesn’t have to be perfect, but it demonstrates you understand your product, your market and you have thought about de-risking your proposition.”
5. Quantify the risks
In conclusion, everything comes down to this. When you look from the perspective of the investor, you want to be able to assess the risk of your investment. Sure, you can never completely eliminate risk, but startups who can at least show an understanding or can quantify the risks and milestones, have a stronger case for investors.”
On 26th of June, we celebrated the 5th edition of our signature startup showcase event – Meet the Startups. We welcomed over 250 corporate partners, investors, mentors, journalists, and entrepreneurs to take a look at the best cutting edge tech and startups YES!Delft has to offer. In an Innovation Playground, all the guests could try the prototypes of Warp VR, Somnox, Kitepower, Nurt.Io, Manometric, Momo Medical, Scoozy, Dental Robotics. Meaning they could even test-drive the mobility scooter of Scoozy, try out a VR experience with Warp VR or even sooth their emotions – almost falling asleep – by hugging the sleep robot of Somnox.
Afterwards, they were dazzled by the pitches of Momo Medical,BI/OND, VideowindoW, Qlayers, Dutch Analytics, and Warp VR. The captivated audience was entertained by MtS host Gerrit H – Mr. Red Sneakers – with an ongoing quiz about the pitches and calls to action presented. The sharpest audience member was awarded a Somnox sleep robot for his knowledge about the ecosystem. Even more, the latest batch of Accelerator startups was there with a stand and everybody could talk with them! Make sure to not miss the next edition!

This Accelerator alumnus announced a collaboration with YES!Delft partner Tata Steel on stage at Meet the Startups. Together they will utilize Warp VR’s virtual reality training technology for safety in IJmuiden location. In spring, Warp VR developed a first virtual reality training after doing a workshop with the Tata Steel safety team. After the success of the first training, they will continue to develop several safety scenarios for training which will eventually be used to train large groups of up to 2000 Tata Steel employees.
Huawei has joined forces with this Accelerator alumnus and will be showcasing their energy harvesting solution at MWC Shanghai 2019. Nowi is a pioneer in novel energy harvesting technology. Their technology enables the capturing of ambient energy sources such as light, temperature gradients or radio frequency, with the highest efficiency.
Validation Lab and Accelerator alumnus Manometric was one of the startups on the Innovation Playground, where they showcased their 3D hand scanner. Moreover, the MedTech startup won the Vereniging Samenwerkende Topklinische Ziekenhuizen (STZ) Innovation Challenge. The impact and scalability of the product impressed the jury. There Manometric won 3500 EUR to support the further validation of their product.
Nightbalance founder Eline Vrijland-Van Beest, who was named one of the MIT 35 under 35, wrote about her seven biggest learnings for MedTech product development. Founded in 2009, the MedTech startup and Accelerator alumnus developed their Sleep Position Trainer (SPT). This device is a comfortable and easy to use treatment alternative for people who suffer from positional obstructive sleep apnea. Nightbalance was ultimately acquired by Philips in 2018.
ComplexTech startup VSParticle was named one of the ten winners in the Academic Startup Competition, out of the 28 startups competing. All winners first pitched at GES 2019. Now, all the winning startups will travel Silicon Valley, courtesy of the Dutch Ministry of Economic affairs, to learn how to scale their innovations faster.
The Aviation startup and Accelerator alumnus has announced that Rene Worms, former Managing Director of Topcon Positioning Europe, will be joining as Head of Global Sales. Together they will work on the international expansion of the professional vertical take-off landing (VTOL) mapping and surveying (fixed wing) drone Marlyn, which is known for its accuracy, ease of use, and highest wind resistance in its class.
BNR’s annual Green Quest Award looks for the most sustainable entrepreneurs, and Accelerator alumnus McNetiq has been nominated. Their magnetic Controlock scaffold anchor can cuts costs by reducing energy usage, the anchors can be reused indefinitely and the application is toxin free. McNetiq is up for the Audience Award, and you can vote for them here! The grand winner will be announced at the grand life show on July 1st.

Skeletal misalignment is surprisingly more common than most people think, misalignment in the feet alone affects over 45% of the world population. The feet are the foundation of the entire skeletal structure and if left untreated leads to chronic pain in knees, hips, lower back or legs, and if left untreated increases the chances of getting osteoarthritis in the knees and hip by 55%.
For a truly unique solution, they have combined hardware and AI enabled software to offer a complete solution.
Gyrafits G-Script is a fully adjustable insole orthotic that can correct misalignment in the feet up to 8 degrees and can be adjusted at the point of diagnosis. ARCEON-Novel Elements was established by Rahul Shirke and Bernhard Heidenreich in 2018. We are developing novel and advanced ceramic matrix composite (CMC). Our pilot project will travel to our one and only natural satellite- The Moon. This project allows us to prove the credibility of our innovation. The material is unique because it can withstand a wide range of temperature (from cryogenic to 1600 °C and above) at near zero thermal expansion, high specific strength, corrosion resistance and, most importantly: it is 25% lighter than aluminum alloys. Due to the lack of polymers, it is also stable for long-term in space environment, which is characterized by vacuum and irradiation.

Flying insects are getting a new and sustainable enemy. The control of insect pests now mainly takes place with the help of (bio) chemical and biological agents. PATS Indoor Drone Solutions, a spin-off from Delft University of Technology, is changing that with small drones that automate pest control and prevention. Through a pilot project aimed at combating the golden twin-spot moth (Chrysodeixis chalcites), a number of innovative gerbera growers are taking advantage of this development to remain at the forefront of sustainable cultivation and cultivation knowledge.
PATS sees its technology not only as a supplement to the current package of resources. In the long term, the system must also reduce substance use for specific pests and it is expected that the grower will have to spend less time scouting and combating pests.
“The aim is to fully implement the fight against the golden twin-spot moth, for example, using our system, precisely because of the preventive approach we use. In addition, our solution does not conflict with the biological control of other pests through targeted control of the moth itself.”
Smart-Ship is setting sail to disrupt the maritime market! Through the application of haptic feedback technology, Smart-Ship is aiming to optimize the interaction between man and machine. By making information transfer to the operators of ships faster and more intuitive, safety and sustainability in maritime operations can be improved. Applications range from small fast ships to offshore and dredging operations, tugs and simulations.

VideowindoW is a glare control system embedded into the exterior glass that doubles as a transparent video screen. He adds:’ This way glare control can even be a profit driver for airports’. With airports being their focus international expansion is a logical next step.

DeNoize, a complex-tech startup from the YES!Delft claims to have found a better solution. They have developed an active noise cancellation technology for building facades, promising at least 90% additional reduction against the outdoor noise. Their innovation paved their path to the finals of Philips Innovation Awards and a special feature in the BBC’s science podcast, “The Naked Scientist”. The DeNoize team is working hard to commercialize its technology and aims to finish the market-ready product within a year.
