YES!Delft The Hague moves to The Hague Tech

Tech incubator YES!Delft The Hague joins forces with innovation hub The Hague Tech. As one ecosystem the companies will collaborate on their combined mission: facilitate entrepreneurs in their growth and stimulate digital innovation.

For YES!Delft the move is an important step: “At YES!Delft The Hague we have three main activities. Obviously, we guide and support ambitious and promising tech startups in bringing their digital innovations to the market. Next to this we also support corporates in their innovation journey. And for the Public sector, we are rolling out an ambitious GovTech program to accelerate digital innovations in this domain. This resonates highly with The Hague Tech’s ambition and community. This is the reason why we moved to their location. Together with our joining startups and the local ecosystem we are confident to boost the broader adoption of innovative solutions”, Ras Lalmy, MD YES!Delft The Hague comments.

Olga Wielders, Co-founder of The Hague Tech is pleased with the move: “Together we can generate higher value and innovate faster. We ensure enrichment and a deepening of the program offered as part of the broad, innovative ecosystem. This program includes joint programs on artificial intelligence, diversity in tech, and GovTech; technologies designed for government purposes. We build a community around these programs by offering a location, getting partners involved, and work together on different problems. Jointly we can work on strengthening the digital startup ecosystem in The Hague and the IT & Security Campus.”

Saskia Bruines, Alderman and Deputy Mayor of the municipality of The Hague, welcomes the collaboration: “The coming together of these two organizations is a great step forward in further strengthening of The Hague ecosystem for innovative startups. The fact that they join forces will lead to an even stronger The Hague startup community”

As a first step, relevant breakthrough technologies in AgriTech will be mapped.

“Kubota’s approach to open innovation through its regional Innovation Centers matches perfectly with the YES!Delft incubation approach. YES!Delft among the top 5 business incubators in the world

Tech incubator YES!Delft has, again, secured a spot in the top 5 of the UBI Global ranking of the world’s best university incubators. YES!Delft sees this as recognition for the excellent work it does for startups and scaleups. Earlier this year, YES!Delft introduced the incubator 4.0: a new concept to provide startups with everything they need in their lifecycle.

The new YES!Delft incubator 4.0 supports tech startups in all phases of their business and consists of four parts. Through YES!Talents entrepreneurs find a co-founder or talented team members. For suitable financing and advice to keep their startup financially healthy, they can use the YES!Funded service. WithYES!Programs YES!Delft also offers customised expertise and knowledge from experts and practitioners in areas such as market validation, sales, corporate finance, marketing, intellectual property and personal and professional development. Finally, the incubator 4.0 programme offers access to the YES!Delft ecosystem consisting of corporate partners, fieldlabs, investors and launching customers.

Evert Jaap Lugt, Managing Director at YES!Delft is excited about the incubator 4.0 concept: “This new development is in line with our mission to build an ecosystem that allows tech startups to become the leading companies of the future. Our growing network of companies that are joining that ecosystem is an important part of the development.”

In addition to the incubator 4.0, YES!Delft started a new initiative this year to solve problems of corporates by using startup and validation methodologies: Innocubes. Innocubes has everything it takes to enable companies to rapidly find innovative solutions to their challenges: from formulating an innovation strategy to developing and implementing customised technologies. The first collaborations between corporates and startups have been established. For example, Tata Steel has started a pilot with YES!Delft startup WarpVR. Together they develop virtual reality training courses that are able to train groups of up to 2000 employees.

Lugt: “Innocubes offers tech startups a unique way to test their technology on a large scale in real life. By continuing our development, we keep our quality high. This spot in the top 5 of the UBI Global ranking is a clear international recognition of that quality.”

UBI Global is a Swedish-based intelligence company and community, known for high-quality intelligence, assessment and mapping of business incubation. The top lists of business incubators as assessed in their World Benchmark Study 2019-2020 were released at the World Incubation Summit in Qatar.

GETTING INVESTOR-READY AND BRIDGING THE VALLEY OF DEATH?

Getting investor-ready and bridging the Valley of Death? Jan Geert van Hall answers

Getting investment as a startup is such a challenge that there are specific hurdles, one of which is the Valley of Death. YES!Funded team from YES!Delft aims to demystify this challenge during the Rotterdam Capital Days with a dedicated event. During September 18th – 22nd, the three-day event aims to demystify the world of capital, boosting access to funding for startups and scaleups. Ultimately, with the goal of connecting entrepreneurs and investors. Anyone with an interest in how to attract and raise capital in the area of Rotterdam is invited. Mainly, there will be investors – angels, corporate venture, venture capital, impact, public, and more. YES!Delft service YES!Funded will host an event about the so-called Valley of Death in funding.
What is the Valley of Death?

Jan Geert van Hall, the investment director at YES!Delft describes the Valley of Death as a European problem – the funding gap startups almost inevitably run into. This funding gap usually comes about around the time they have a well-working prototype and some paying pilot customers but need a financial boost to start production and activate sales. At this point, the startups are too advanced for government subsidies, and at the same time too early stage for VC’s. At least in Europe. During the YES!Delft dedicated event at Rotterdam Capital Days, Jan Geert and guests will share the experiences of YES!Funded about the Valley of Death and explore possible solutions to this problem.

Through the YES!Delft service YES!Funded startups can get help with financial lifecycle planning and securing the right funds. The initiative is lead by YES!Delft investment director Jan Geert van Hall, who employs his decades of experience in tech and finance to help tomorrow’s leading firms. Is your startup is looking for its first investment or your startup is further down the road? Here Jan Geert shares his top five tips that are essential to make and keep your startup investor-ready. Join YES!Funded at the Rotterdam Capital Days, and learn about bridging the Valley of Death.

1. Financial forecasting

“The ability to look ahead and anticipate for the future is a basic entrepreneurial financial skill. The lack of such a vision within a company is a definite red flag as it shows a lack of financial discipline.”

2. Top team

“This is a big one. First off, the chances of receiving investment are very low if you are a single founder. Ideally, you have a team of people with different disciplines. Secondly, there is a shared long term vision in the company. Especially the founders should be on the same page and have the same ultimate goals, whether that is an acquisition or scaling up.”

3. Intellectual property

“IP is another facet investors will look at, and for several reasons. First, to make sure you will be able to defend your product from infringement. But parallel to that, they want to understand what it is your product is capable of and the problems it claims to solve. Why is your product unique, and why hasn’t it been invented before?”

4. Checking important milestones

“Having a roadmap with milestones and a clear vision is essential. It shows your estimated worth at each milestone but also the amount of money you need to get there is invaluable when presenting yourself to investors. It doesn’t have to be perfect, but it demonstrates you understand your product, your market and you have thought about de-risking your proposition.”

5. Quantify the risks

In conclusion, everything comes down to this. When you look from the perspective of the investor, you want to be able to assess the risk of your investment. Sure, you can never completely eliminate risk, but startups who can at least show an understanding or can quantify the risks and milestones, have a stronger case for investors.”

Make sure not to miss the event Bridging the Valley of Death during the Rotterdam Capital Days!

Rahul Shirke – Founder & Director ARCEON

ARCEON-Novel Elements was established by Rahul Shirke and Bernhard Heidenreich in 2018. We are developing novel and advanced ceramic matrix composite (CMC). Our pilot project will travel to our one and only natural satellite- The Moon. This project allows us to prove the credibility of our innovation. The material is unique because it can withstand a wide range of temperature (from cryogenic to 1600 °C and above) at near zero thermal expansion, high specific strength, corrosion resistance and, most importantly: it is 25% lighter than aluminum alloys. Due to the lack of polymers, it is also stable for long-term in space environment, which is characterized by vacuum and irradiation.

“We believe that our material has tremendous potential, not only in the aerospace but also energy, high-tech, and automobile industry. ARCEON family includes scientific, engineering and business development experts in the field of innovative materials with international experience. Our vision is to push the limits and deliver high-quality novel materials.”

PATS Indoor Drone Solutions: Drones fight golden twin-spot moth in gerbera and chrysanthemum
PATS Indoor Drone Solutions- YES!Delft Accelerator
Bram Tijmons (Co-Founder, CEO)

Flying insects are getting a new and sustainable enemy. The control of insect pests now mainly takes place with the help of (bio) chemical and biological agents. PATS Indoor Drone Solutions, a spin-off from Delft University of Technology, is changing that with small drones that automate pest control and prevention. Through a pilot project aimed at combating the golden twin-spot moth (Chrysodeixis chalcites), a number of innovative gerbera growers are taking advantage of this development to remain at the forefront of sustainable cultivation and cultivation knowledge.

PATS sees its technology not only as a supplement to the current package of resources. In the long term, the system must also reduce substance use for specific pests and it is expected that the grower will have to spend less time scouting and combating pests.

“The aim is to fully implement the fight against the golden twin-spot moth, for example, using our system, precisely because of the preventive approach we use. In addition, our solution does not conflict with the biological control of other pests through targeted control of the moth itself.”

Braindrop: Notre Dame Cathedral could have been saved originally!
Mustafa Torun (Director) & Ugur Kizilkaya (Founder)

“We, as Braindrop BV, Netherlands, June 2019, have released a revolution which avoids new “Notre Dame catastrophes” forever. It is the strongest and 100% nontoxic fire protection chemical agent which makes anything fireproof easily. So strong that one can apply to his hand and put his hand into the fire!

Every 88 seconds one person die because of fires and billions of dollars damage occurs to the global economy every year. We lose lives, environment, and prosperity like monuments.

The main concern of existing flame retardants is their toxic feature and that they destroy slowly even if they stop fires. Our product TNF now is the single best solution which assures these concerns and provides the lifelong durable fire resistance for people, companies, and governments.”

VideowindoW from Vintage to Future
VideoWindoW - YES!Delft Accelerator
Remco Veenbrink (Founder, CEO) & Mark Oudenhoven (Founder, CFO)

Unlike most hardware startups these founders do not have a degree in engineering –one is an artist and the other an economist. All knowledge is self-taught by tactical learning: ‘to know just enough to challenge existing beliefs and rock the status quo on how to approach further development’ thus Remco Veenbrink. Their innovation is based on available parts engineering added with state of the art electronics and algorithms to create a minimum viable product. Mark Oudenhoven: ‘We implement continuous improvement and focus on strategic growth’ Their primary market segment is airports for which they recently contracted Rotterdam The Hague Airport as their launching customer. VideowindoW is a glare control system embedded into the exterior glass that doubles as a transparent video screen. He adds:’ This way glare control can even be a profit driver for airports’. With airports being their focus international expansion is a logical next step.

‘Passengers can enjoy artistic or commercial content and look outside when they focus beyond the glass layer’.

DeNoize – “Active Noise Cancelling Headphones – For Buildings”
DeNoize - YES!Delft Accelerator
Aman Jindal (Founder, CEO)

Noise is frequently cited as one of the leading causes of stress in city life. People living near airports and busy roads complain that they can never relax because of the intrusive sound. Their experiences are reflected in higher levels of mental ill-health, and physical problems like high blood pressure, strokes and early onset of cardiovascular diseases.

DeNoize, a complex-tech startup from the YES!Delft claims to have found a better solution. They have developed an active noise cancellation technology for building facades, promising at least 90% additional reduction against the outdoor noise. Their innovation paved their path to the finals of Philips Innovation Awards and a special feature in the BBC’s science podcast, “The Naked Scientist”. The DeNoize team is working hard to commercialize its technology and aims to finish the market-ready product within a year.
