ProRail ERTMS Innovation Partnership Challenge

Kickoff Information day

25-06-2020

Apply now

ProRail ensures that the Netherlands is connected by a rail network, which their passengers and commodity carriers feel comfortable using. To achieve this they currently equipe the tracks and trains with the European Rail Traffic Management System (ERTMS), the new standard for train safety. This system is an important step towards the digitisation of rails and offers potential benefits in terms of reliability, speed, increasing capacity and facilitating cross-border train traffic.

The aim of ProRail is to install the ERTMS in all trains by 2022, and on the busiest stretches of tracks by 2030. To be able to give shape to these ambitions, ProRail needs innovations. Especially because they expect a growth in rail usage, to over 40% until 2040, which means that even more trains will have to run on their already busy network.  ProRail will therefore be introducing a new train safety system in the coming years. One of their biggest operations ever.

Innovation solutions

If ProRail starts rolling out the ERTMS according to their current processes, and using only existing products, they won’t be able to achieve national coverage until 2050. That is why they are looking for new solutions to roll out the system faster, which will result in less inconvenience, and lower costs. Specifically ProRail has four issues for which they are looking for solution providers:

  1. The objects of ERTMS must be able to receive power and data. How is ProRail able to replace the current process of digging and laying cables for a new solution that is faster and less expensive?
  2. Smarter housing: the introduction of ERTMS enables a combination of housings: power supply, signalling and ICT equipment. ProRail is looking for enclosures that are climate-proof, circular, CO2-neutral and quick to install (for example, because they are already prefabricated elsewhere).
  3. Smart building along the track: thousands of objects (balises, stop-marker signs, axle counters, etc.) have to be placed in and directly around the track. ProRail is looking for a smart solution that allows them to limit inconvenience to travellers and commodity carriers as much as possible when placing the objects.
  4. Faster design: ProRail is looking for a solution that reduces the design phase from months to weeks or even days.

In addition to these four issues, there is also the possibility of participating with a so-called ‘Wildcard’. Especially meant for entrepreneurs who have an innovation that does not match the described issues but can contribute to the challenges around ERTMS.

Are you able to provide a solution for one or more challenges of ProRail?

AIRLab Cleaning Bot Challenge

AIRLab is looking for partners with an existing solution or a concept close to production that can deliver a solution.

Focus Area

Robotics & AI

APPLY NOW

The world is facing challenging times. However, these are also the times that bright innovative minds can blossom and show their entrepreneurial agility and willpower. Will you be part of the people that will realize the next generation technology that creates safer and cleaner environments for people all over the world?

Ahold Delhaize’s AI for Retail (AIR) Lab is currently looking for innovative companies that are able to build an autonomous store cleaning solution. The urgency is there, what’s missing is the right innovation.

The AIRLab Delft is the joint industry lab of Ahold Delhaize and the TU Delft, driving innovations at the intersection of retail, AI and robotics. It recently opened a test site where researchers – supported by RoboValley and tech incubator YES!Delft – can work with partners, students and startups to build and test prototypes of robotic solutions.

Looking for the cleaning solution of tomorrow

Supermarkets have their doors open from early morning until late in the evening to provide customers not only with the groceries they need, but also with a great shopping experience. Easy access, convenience and a wide assortment are all part of that experience. Hygiene is at the top of the priority list, too, especially in the time of COVID-19.

In supermarkets, floors are cleaned once a day before each store opens. It takes cleaning personnel an average of two hours every morning to sweep the floors for dirt, mop the hard-to-reach corners, and then go through the store with a ride-on floor scrubber. It is certainly both a time-consuming and labor-intensive activity.

Ahold Delhaize’s AI for Retail (AIR) Lab is, thus, looking for a partner that can automate this process by creating an autonomous cleaning robot.

Who are we looking for?

Ahold Delhaize’s new partner in this endeavor can be any company that can provide the right solution – from early-stage startups to scale-ups and SMEs. To be considered for the program, candidates need to:

  • Have a motivated and ambitious team, with a minimum of two co-founders, available as of right now;
  • Have an existing prototype or MVP;
  • Have a solution that is scalable and leads to solving the AIRLab Cleaning Bot Challenge;
  • Be able to pitch their solution in English and/or Dutch.

Does that sound like a challenge for your company? If you are developing or already have a robotics-based cleaning solution, then we want to hear from you. Apply now and get a chance to win a pilot with Ahold Delhaize.

If you have a question about this challenge, please reach out to Thomas Roodenberg – Roodenberg.thomas@ahold.com

Shell New Energy Challenge 2020

Shell, Rockstart, YES!Delft and Get in the Ring are looking for innovative hardware, production processes, and underlying digital solutions in hydrogen, future fuels and sustainable chemicals.

Register now

The New Energy Challenge is a start-up competition, jointly organized by Shell, Rockstart, YES!Delft and Get in the Ring. The competition is designed for entrepreneurs in Europe and Israel who are developing advanced technologies and disruptive solutions that could be vital in accelerating the energy transition.

Collaborations between start-ups and industry leaders create the opportunity to fast-track the development and introduction of breakthrough technologies. In order to challenge the status quo and bring innovation forward, the New Energy Challenge calls for European and Israeli start-ups and scale-ups to come forward and propose game-changing solutions that will shape the low-carbon energy infrastructure of the future.

The New Energy Challenge consists of two distinct tracks: a track for start-ups in TRL 2-5 stage, up until and including seed stage and a track for scale-ups in TRL 6-9 stage with early revenues, market validation by pilot(s), Series A and higher.

Track 1 – Start-ups

Track One offers early-stage start-ups an intensive programme designed by YES!Delft for finalists to validate their business plans and exchange ideas with coaches and experts. The winning finalist will receive €100.000 towards a proof of concept within the Shell GameChanger programme, giving them a quick and cost-effective way to test the technical and commercial viability of their solution.

Track 2 – Scale-ups

Track Two offers scale-ups the opportunity to engage with experts from Rockstart and exchange knowledge and ideas as well the opportunity to design a pilot proposal. The winner will further develop and potentially execute the pilot, together with Shell Ventures and Shell’s Hydrogen, New Fuels or Chemicals business.

Criteria to join the programme
  • Start-ups must be in TRL 2-5 stage, up until and including seed stage.
  • Scale-ups must be in TRL 6-9 stage with early revenues, market validation by pilot(s), Series A and higher.

  • Have at least 2 founders.

Sign up from 14 April until 22 May 2020.
