Talking about food has always been a great conversation topic. With the growing awareness around climate change, though, talking about alternative meat – and other animal products – has turned into the main topic of many conversations.

The benefits of a plant-based diet for the health of the consumer, for animal welfare, and for the future of our planet have captured increasing attention, leading to more and more meatless alternatives on the market. DSM, a global company active in health, nutrition, and sustainable living has already developed a series of ingredients that enhance the taste, texture and nutritional value of such alternatives, and is now looking to take the next step.

If you are a company developing an innovative solution that can (help) mimic the real meat experience, then this call is just for you. Join the DSM Meat Replacement Innovation Challenge, in collaboration with YES!Delft, and prove why you should be the company’s newest partner in this endeavor.

Making non-meat taste, look and feel like real meat

The key challenge in growing into this innovative and relatively new market segment is the ability to capture the hearts of vegetarians and non-vegetarians alike. To cater to the latter, plant-based products need to look, taste, and feel like actual animal products.

It is not just about the flavor and texture, it is also about the entire cooking and eating experience – and that has to be as authentic as possible. Achieving this authenticity is what DSM is aiming for.

The company is therefore looking for solutions that can:

  • Mimic a satisfying cooking and eating experience for alternatives of animal products (including fish, seafood, and egg products);
  • Improve the mouthfeel and juiciness of such alternatives;
  • Introduce new technologies to the production process of (meat) replacements.

Who is this challenge for?

The focus of this program is mostly on companies that already have ready-to-scale solutions in the field. A proof of concept or a working prototype is a key requirement.

The scale-ups that this challenge is looking for need to be developing new, high-potential meat alternative products/ingredients or production technologies.

More early-stage companies may be considered on a case-by-case basis.

What to win?

Winning the DSM Meat Replacement Innovation Challenge comes with a number of perks. The selected companies will get 50,000 euros worth of spending on a joint project with DSM to help bring their product to the next level.
